Youth Ministry

The Apostle Paul writes, “So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us.” 1 Thessalonians 2:8
Sharing faith and life is the hope and goal of youth, family and outreach ministries of Peace. Each student and family has their own story. We desire to make space for them to share their stories and to hear (again) the story of God’s love for us and for this world. We connect youth with caring adults in trusting, faith-filled relationships. We offer youth opportunities to grow in faith, discover gifts, serve meaningfully and develop as leaders.

If your child is interested in joining any of these programs, please contact Jayna Detweiler, Coordinator of Children, Youth & Family Ministry at jayna@peacetacoma.org.

Regular Events

All regular youth events of Peace Lutheran Church are suspended during the coronavirus health crisis. Please check out links to youth faith resources here:
Sunday School
Sundays, 9:45-10:45 a.m.
In three Sunday morning classes (5th-6th grade, 7th-8th grade, high school), caring adult leaders meet youth where they are and help them reflect on faith, scripture and how God is at work in their lives.
Open Center
Select Fridays after school
A high school youth drop-in and community space, high school students are invited to Peace for a safe place to hang out, have food, have fun, and explore community and questions of faith. We encourage the development of physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing in youth by providing a safe environment, consistent adult involvement, and relevant faith devotionals. If you are able to volunteer your time or some supplies, please contact Brendan Nelson. We can’t wait to see you there!
Feet to Faith
Sundays, 9:45-10:45 a.m. during the school year
This is our two-year Confirmation Ministry program specifically for 7th and 8th graders (for other grades, please speak with Pastor John about joining the program). Feet to Faith is a combination of study, reflection and service in light of the Christian faith and real life. Students get an overview of the whole biblical story and learn about baptism, prayer, Holy Communion and other aspects of the faith. Pastor John and Brendan Nelson lead the Feet to Faith ministry along with other caring adults.
Servant Opportunities
Youth are involved in serving through the church; for example, the Easter Breakfast, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day breakfasts, neighborhood cleanups and yard work to bless our neighbors. Youth regularly help lead worship, serving as acolytes, readers, ushers, musicians and assisting ministers.

Special Events

Service Learning Trips
Youth of Peace get away to serve, learn and grow in faith. In the summer, an annual Mission Trip is an opportunity for youth to immerse themselves in a new context to serve God and neighbors and to grow in faith.

Fellowship Events

Corn Maze, Fool’s Night Out, Lock-Ins and Movie Nights are some examples. These events are not regularly scheduled but happen throughout the year.
