Outreach Ministry

The Apostle Paul writes, “As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness and patience.” Colossians 3:12

God’s vision for Peace is to be a community that is compassionate. Compassion means nonjudgmental and inclusive of all people and reaching out in care to help those who are vulnerable, struggling or suffering. Compassion includes ministries to those not yet part of the worshiping community (outreach). We reach out to our neighbors with the love of God and invite people to experience God through worship and the life of the Peace community. We seek to be a presence of hope and peace in the Hilltop community where neighbors feel they are cared for and are a part of the Peace family. We see our neighborhood as our parish.

Outreach Ministry Opportunities

Ambassadors for Christ
2 Corinthians 5:20 says that we are ambassadors for Christ, and God uses us to let people know about God’s love in Jesus. We gather to reflect on and pray for the many ways we as individuals and a community can reach out and share the love of God in Jesus.
Children, Youth and Intergenerational Ministries

Please see these sections under Children & Youth Ministries in order to learn more about outreach into the neighborhood through dedicated children, youth and intergenerational ministries.

Community Meals
Each year, in partnership with other local churches, we provide hot dinners on weekdays in April and October from 5:30–6:30 pm. These meals are served in the Multipurpose Room and hosted by various churches, groups and families. This is a great time for fellowship with neighbors, church members and Peace Community Center participants. We also have a clothing closet open 6-7 pm on Mondays and Fridays. Our Community Resources Ministry offers a free Community Meal from 5:30 – 6:30 pm every Friday evening throughout the year. This Friday meal is paired with community resources made available through social service providers present and available to speak with any that stop by. This ministry supports individuals in need toward a more sustainable livelihood.
Family Day at Peace/Block Party
Once a year in the summer we invite family, friends, coworkers and neighbors to a big community event after worship where we gather outside and worship! This is our end-of-summer celebration and is a great time for fellowship with neighbors. Free food, fellowship, fun and community connections are all available. We also have free school supplies!
Holiday Bazaar
A once-a-year event that brings together members of our congregation and the community. Items are donated for sale at the bazaar. The low prices and large variety of items makes this a popular event in our neighborhood. Proceeds go to the Emergency Assistance Fund.
Peace Community Center Programs
Peace Community Center was birthed by Peace Lutheran Church in 1996 and is the church’s first partner in outreach to our Hilltop neighborhood. Peace Community Center serves children, youth and families of the Hilltop with tutoring, mentoring, support and encouragement to reach their God-given potential. With mission sites at McCarver Elementary School, Jason Lee Middle School and the Church/Center main facility at 21st and S Cushman, Peace Community Center serves children from second grade through high school and beyond, supporting them in post-secondary education and training.
Sidewalk Ministry
(Wednesdays, 1-2 p.m. in the summer) Join a group that hangs out in front of our church sign with free cookies and lemonade for passersby. Meet neighbors, share conversations, invite people to church and to upcoming activities – in person!
Van Ministry
Provides van rides to church on Sundays. Interested parties should call the church office, then dial star (*) 120 to reach the van line. Please remember to leave your name, address, time of service you would like to attend, and phone number (in case we need to contact you). Calls must be made by the Saturday before service as drivers check messages early Sunday morning before setting out.
